What is ISTEP?
ISTEP stands for Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+). It is designed to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science*, and Social Studies**. In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted in November 2000 by the Indiana State Board of Education. An Applied Skills Assessment and a Multiple-Choice Assessment are used to measure these standards; they are required components of the ISTEP+ program.
The scores are utilized by local school corporations to determined the level of mastery that your child has achieved. Student scores help teachers better individualize instruction to meet each student's needs.

What are State Standards?
The state of Indiana determines what every student should learn during each year of their education. Knowing what your child's expectations are at each grade level is very helpful - especially if you feel your child is struggling in any area. If your child needs to be challenged, you may wish to research standards at the next grade level.
