Students and teachers are always concerned about being given a bad (or boring) prompt. I continually remind my students that there is no ISTEP (or testing) police. Many students worry about being truthful when asked to write about "Your Most Memorable Day". Students are relieved to know that they can "embellish" their stories. Yet, students still need to know what to do if I have to write to a bad prompt. Students also worry about being timed. So it is my job to give them enough positive experiences with prompt writing along with coaching them through this process. I want each of my novice writers to feel successful. |
Writing Prompts can be very stressful for our students. Finding ways to help students excel ~ under pressure, is one of many jobs teachers must undertake. So I have my students practice many, timed writing prompts throughout the year. I have learned to teach specific skills that apply to all writing, but specifically for writing to a prompt.
~This page was designed to provide resources for writing to a prompt. Let's help students feel confident when writing during a timed prompt. |
