Music is to the soul what words are to the mind.
Music to help students transition to the next activity
Students are expected to follow procedures for cleaning up and setting up for the next subject or scheduled activity. I spend time at the beginning of the school year and as needed throughout the year to explicitly teach procedures for transition time. I model for my students, create an anchor chart, then practice with the music.
Music will play during this time to prompt students to prepare for the next lesson. Materials should be put away in the correct places and new materials taken out by the time the music ends. There should be no talking during this time...but students often sing along to the music. The songs are longer than the time needed for a smooth transition, so I decide when to stop the music. I will stop the music myself with a remote mouse or use a student helper to stop the music at just the right time. I usually play the music for 1 - 2 minutes.
