What is 6+1 Traits Writing?
The 6 Traits of Writing is a program designed to help students become better writers.
The 6+1 Traits of Writing Model of Instruction and Assessment is a research based tool to develop high quality writing skills in our students. The writing process (i.e. pre-write, first draft, revise, edit, and publish) was taught as our main focus lessons in writing. These lessons still need to be taught, but to develop proficient writers we also need to incorporate the 6+1 traits as well. These traits empower our students with strategies that are specific to each genre and/or purpose for writing.

Mini-Lessons
Students are engaged in mini-lessons that focus on learning a specific trait of writing several times as week. Students are expected to write everyday! Sharing our stories with our peers is the highlight of our week. Visit Smekens Education Solutions website for mini-lesson ideas for each trait. You will begin the year with launching the Writer's Workshop by teaching the routines and procedures, kid friendly rubrics, and introducing each trait. Be sure to have a year long wall/bulletin board display for writing focus.
