Unit 6: Indiana Today
The United States is a democratic republic. This means that voters choose people to represent their interests in the government. At the national and state level, the government is divided into the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. A system of checks and balances ensures that one branch does not end up with too much power. On the local level, Indiana is divided into county, municipal, and township governments. As citizens, the government guarantees us certain rights. With these rights come certain responsibilities, such as paying taxes and obeying laws.
Indiana's economy is a free-enterprise system where business owners decide what to sell. Customers decide what to buy based on what they want or need, and how much they are willing to pay. Many businesses are located in Indiana because of our state's central location and our excellent transportation system. Not only does this system link Indiana to other states, but it connects the state to the global economy. As partners in the global economy, Hoosiers need to work at solving environmental problems. Some scientists say that to solve the problem of global warming, we need to use renewable sources of energy.
