Fourth Graders love learning about longitude and latitude when we use an orange to represent the Earth. We carved lines of longitude from the top of the orange (the North Pole) to the bottom of the orange (the South Pole). Learning that the latitude lines are "the fatitude" lines where the belt or (Equator) goes around the "fattest" part of the Earth, helped everyone remember which direction the latitude lines run. Remembering that the long "skinny" lines are called the longitude lines, was introduced as we thought about how oranges are healthy and will keep you long and skinny.
